AKRAGAS BECAME ONE OF THE LEADING CITIES OF THE ANCIENT MEDITERRANEAN

Agrigento's temples, fields and later city preserve far more than a single classical monument.

UNESCO describes Agrigento as a sixth-century BCE Greek colony that became one of the leading cities of the Mediterranean, with a remarkable row of Doric temples and substantial Hellenistic, Roman and early Christian evidence across the ancient polis. Sicily's official tourism guide connects that archaeological landscape with the modern city's Via Atenea, the medieval streets of Girgenti, San Gerlando Cathedral, Santa Maria dei Greci and the regional archaeological museum. Porto Empedocle, the Pirandello landscape, Scala dei Turchi and Favara add distinct coastal, literary and contemporary threads, but each requires its own access and timing decision.
