THE TOMB THAT GAVE THE WORLD A WORD

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus made Bodrum the birthplace of an architectural idea.

GoTürkiye explains that ancient Bodrum was Halicarnassus, home of the monumental tomb built for the Carian ruler Mausolus in the fourth century BCE. Celebrated as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, it gave later monumental tombs the name “mausoleum.” Earthquakes brought the structure down over centuries, and stone from the site was later reused in Bodrum Castle. Seeing the surviving archaeological site, the castle and the harbor together reveals how the same materials and waterfront carried Bodrum through very different historical eras.
