GADIR TO LA PEPA · A CITY REMADE BY THE SEA

Cádiz turned successive maritime eras into towers, fortifications and constitutional memory.

The official provincial tourism guide dates Cádiz's Phoenician foundation as Gadir to around 1100 BCE, followed by Carthaginian, Roman, Visigothic and Muslim chapters. Later Atlantic commerce with the Americas helped produce baroque palaces and their lookout towers, while defenses still shape the sea-facing city. In 1812, the Cortes of Cádiz met at the Oratory of San Felipe Neri as Spain's first constitution was drafted. Together, those layers make the old city more than a quick cathedral stop.
