The official Región de Murcia guide dates Cartagena's theatre to the late first century BCE under Augustus and gives its original capacity as roughly 6,000 spectators. The same site later became a fifth-century commercial complex, a Byzantine district, an area with Islamic-period structures and, after the Castilian conquest, part of the neighborhood around Santa María la Vieja. Its rediscovery lets travelers read several Cartagenas in one place rather than treating the theatre as an isolated ruin.
