UNESCO includes specific urban areas of Catania within the eight Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto, rebuilt after the catastrophic earthquake of 1693. Unlike towns reconstructed on new sites, Catania rose again on the location of the earlier city. Its squares, churches and civic spaces therefore connect an ambitious Baroque rebuilding project with the long, continuing presence of Mount Etna on Sicily's eastern coast.
