IN 1905, COLLIOURE'S LIGHT HELPED CHANGE MODERN PAINTING

Matisse and Derain turned the colors of Collioure into a new artistic language.

The official Pyrénées Méditerranée guide records that Henri Matisse and André Derain spent the summer of 1905 experimenting in Collioure with expressive color rather than literal representation, work that became central to Fauvism. That story can still organize a meaningful visit: follow the Fauvist trail through the harbor and old lanes, then place the art beside the Royal Castle, the sea-facing church, the Mouré quarter and the terraced vineyards. Port-Vendres, Paulilles, Banyuls and the coastal path broaden the Côte Vermeille story, but each needs its own time and transport decision.
