Ephesus & the Aegean Coast

Ephesus anchors a layered Aegean journey through Roman avenues, the Library of Celsus and Great Theatre, with Selçuk, Şirince, Kuşadası and the landscapes of western Anatolia expanding the story beyond the ruins.

A PORT CITY LEFT BEHIND BY THE SEA

Ephesus followed a retreating coastline and preserved the shape of an ancient port.

UNESCO explains that Ephesus developed through successive Hellenistic and Roman settlements as the coastline moved westward from the former estuary of the River Kaystros. Excavation has revealed the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre and the harbor basin of an exceptional Roman port city, while the nearby remains of the Temple of Artemis recall a sanctuary that drew pilgrims from across the Mediterranean. The site therefore tells both an urban story and a changing-landscape story.
