Genoa & the Italian Riviera

Genoa rises between sea and steep hills with medieval lanes, grand Rolli palaces, a transformed old port and lived-in coastal districts, then opens toward the villages and promenades of the Italian Riviera.

GENOA'S ROLLI · PRIVATE PALACES WITH A PUBLIC ROLE

The Palazzi dei Rolli turned aristocratic residences into a remarkable system of state hospitality.

UNESCO dates Genoa's Strade Nuove and Palazzi dei Rolli to the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, when the maritime republic stood at the height of its financial and seafaring power. From 1576, a senate-decreed public-lodging system designated private aristocratic residences to host state visitors. The result joined planned streets, varied palace designs, courtyards, staircases, loggias, frescoes and gardens into an influential urban ensemble that is best understood as a connected district rather than a single building.
