A GENOESE FORTRESS BECAME THE SEAT OF A MEDITERRANEAN PRINCIPALITY

Monaco's story begins on the Rock, long before Monte Carlo supplied its famous shorthand.

The Prince's Palace records that its predecessor was built as the western border fortress of the Republic of Genoa from 1215 and became the Grimaldi residence as the family established sovereignty over Monaco around the turn of the fourteenth century. That history makes Monaco-Ville, Palace Square, the cathedral and cliff gardens one coherent route. The Oceanographic Museum adds Prince Albert I's maritime-science legacy, while Port Hercule and La Condamine tell the lived harbor story below. Monte Carlo's casino, opera and gardens form a separate Belle Époque thread rather than the name for the whole country.
