Nice, Villefranche & the Eastern Riviera

Nice and Villefranche connect two complementary Riviera stories: a cosmopolitan city shaped by international winter visitors, promenades and art, and a smaller harbor town of ochre facades, steep lanes, fortified heritage and a deep blue roadstead.

THE RIVIERA WAS FIRST BUILT AS A COSMOPOLITAN WINTER WORLD

Nice's celebrated seafront grew from a cross-cultural resort city, not a single promenade.

UNESCO describes Nice as the defining winter-resort town of the Riviera, shaped from the mid-eighteenth century by British, Italian, French, Russian and other visitors. The Consiglio d'Ornato, new districts, gardens, villas, hotels and walks such as the Promenade des Anglais joined the medieval old town to an amphitheater of sea and hills. Nearby Villefranche tells a different, intimate maritime story through its harbor, Saint-Elme Citadel, Rue Obscure, Saint-Pierre chapel and Royal Darse. Cap Ferrat, Èze, Monaco and Menton are separate coastal decisions rather than automatic additions to a short call.
