Ortona, Chieti & the Trabocchi Coast

Ortona joins a hilltop Adriatic city, wartime memory and a restored seaward castle to the wooden fishing platforms, cycling route and coastal villages of the Trabocchi Coast, with Chieti as a distinct inland choice.

See more than the headline sights.

Bon Voyage treats a destination as a connected world: history, neighborhoods, food, nearby escapes and the port or route that brought you here all belong to the same journey.

A COASTAL ROUTE SHAPED BY A FORTRESS, FISHING PLATFORMS AND MEMORY

Ortona's castle has watched the Adriatic change from a strategic frontier to a coast made for slower exploration.

Italy's official tourism portal dates the Aragonese Castle's present form to roughly 1450–1470 and records its wartime damage, later landslide and twenty-first-century restoration. The fortress now overlooks the harbor and the Costa dei Trabocchi, where traditional wooden fishing structures and the Via Verde coastal route create a different journey from Ortona's cathedral, lanes and remembrance sites. Build around one coherent thread, and treat San Vito Chietino, Fossacesia, Vasto or inland Chieti as separate plans whose current access and return margin have been checked.
