Palermo & Western Sicily

Palermo layers Arab-Norman monuments, Baroque crossroads, grand theaters and intensely lived-in markets within a coastal capital, while Monreale, Cefalù, Mondello and western Sicily broaden the journey beyond the city.

A CAPITAL OF CULTURAL SYNTHESIS

Palermo's Arab-Norman monuments make coexistence visible in stone and mosaic.

UNESCO's Arab-Norman Palermo property brings together nine civic and religious structures from the Norman Kingdom of Sicily, including sites in Palermo and the cathedrals of Monreale and Cefalù. UNESCO describes their architecture as a cultural synthesis shaped by Western, Islamic and Byzantine traditions. That layered exchange remains the clearest lens for reading the capital before adding its markets, later Baroque spaces, waterfront and surrounding coast.
