A FORTIFIED CITY WITH MANY LAYERS

Rhodes preserves a Gothic stronghold and the later city that grew within it.

UNESCO records that the Order of St John occupied Rhodes from 1309 to 1523 and transformed the city into a fortified stronghold. The Upper Town brings together the Palace of the Grand Masters, the Great Hospital and the Street of the Knights, while the Lower Town layers Gothic buildings with mosques, public baths and other Ottoman-period architecture. That continuity makes the old city more than a monument: it is a compact guide to centuries of eastern Mediterranean exchange and rule.
