Saint-Tropez & the Gulf

Saint-Tropez is more than its celebrity shorthand: a former Mediterranean merchant port, La Ponche's coastal lanes, a citadel of maritime memory, modern-art heritage and a Gulf of distinct villages, vineyards and shorelines.

See more than the headline sights.

Bon Voyage treats a destination as a connected world: history, neighborhoods, food, nearby escapes and the port or route that brought you here all belong to the same journey.

BEFORE THE YACHTS, SAINT-TROPEZ WAS A WORKING MEDITERRANEAN PORT

The harbor's merchant history explains the village more deeply than the Riviera mythology alone.

The official tourism history describes Saint-Tropez first as a merchant port and records that, by the end of the eighteenth century, it ranked behind Marseille and La Ciotat among French Mediterranean ports by ships and sailors. That maritime thread continues through La Ponche, the waterfront and the Citadel's Maritime History Museum. A second thread follows painters drawn to the area's light and color, now reflected in the Annonciade Museum. Beyond the village, Ramatuelle, Gassin, Grimaud and Sainte-Maxime are distinct Gulf places, not interchangeable add-ons to a rushed port day.
