Salerno, Paestum & Cilento

SALERNO'S MEDICAL GARDEN REVEALS A DIFFERENT SIDE OF MEDIEVAL EUROPE

A terraced garden connects Salerno's living old city with the knowledge tradition of the Schola Medica Salernitana.

The Municipality of Salerno describes the Giardino della Minerva as the surviving medicinal garden of Matteo Silvatico, a teacher associated with the medieval medical school who cultivated and classified plants for therapeutic study. Its terraces, water system and viewpoint over the port turn the city's medical history into a place-based route through the historic center, cathedral and waterfront. South of Salerno, UNESCO recognizes Paestum, Velia and Cilento as part of an exceptional cultural landscape shaped by trade and contact among Greek colonies and indigenous peoples. Treat Paestum, deeper Cilento and the Amalfi Coast as separate plans, and verify current official access information before relying on any garden, museum, archaeological site or castle visit.
