Trapani, Erice & the Salt Coast

Trapani anchors a western-Sicily journey through a layered old center, Torre di Ligny, coral and maritime traditions, Erice above the coast and the windmill-dotted salt pans stretching toward Marsala.

Bon Voyage treats a destination as a connected world: history, neighborhoods, food, nearby escapes and the port or route that brought you here all belong to the same journey.

THE SHAPE OF A SICKLE LINKS TRAPANI'S NAME, HARBOR AND LANDSCAPE

Trapani's sea-facing identity begins with Drepanon and continues through coral, salt, fishing and the routes of western Sicily.

Sicily's official tourism guide traces Trapani's name to the Greek Drepanon and the city's sickle-like peninsula between two seas. The same guide connects the historic center's layered streets with Torre di Ligny, coral craftsmanship and the salt pans shaped by sea, wind and sun. This geography creates several strong but separate journeys: a walk through the old city and Tramontana waterfront; Erice's hilltop heritage; the Trapani and Paceco salt landscape; or a longer route toward Marsala, the Stagnone and Mozia. The Egadi Islands, Segesta, San Vito Lo Capo and other western-Sicily destinations should be treated as their own transport-and-time decisions.
