A CAPITAL PLANNED AFTER A SIEGE

Valletta was conceived as a complete fortified Renaissance city.

After the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, the Knights of St John founded Valletta in 1566 on the peninsula between two natural harbors. UNESCO describes its grid, bastioned walls and carefully placed monuments as a unified late-Renaissance creation, with hundreds of civil, religious, artistic and military monuments concentrated inside a remarkably compact city.
