A CITY INSEPARABLE FROM ITS LAGOON

Venice became a maritime power by turning islands, canals and lagoon knowledge into one urban system.

UNESCO describes Venice and its lagoon as an inseparable whole whose settlement grew across 118 small islands. Founded in the fifth century and established as a major maritime power by the tenth, the city developed an extraordinary network of canals, architecture, trading connections and island communities shaped by the ongoing relationship between people and the lagoon environment.
