Almería, the Alcazaba & Cabo de Gata

Almería rises from a working Mediterranean port to a vast hilltop Alcazaba, with a fortified cathedral and compact historic center before the volcanic landscapes of Cabo de Gata.

A CALIPHATE PORT BENEATH ONE OF SPAIN'S GREAT CITADELS

Almería makes sense from the water upward: port, old city, fortified height, then the wider province.

Spain's official tourism guide describes Almería as an important port of the Caliphate of Córdoba and places the Alcazaba, Cathedral, historic quarter and Nicolás Salmerón Park within the city story. Its Alcazaba guide dates the fortress's foundation to 955 under Abd al-Rahman III and describes three successive enclosures. Build a compact city route around the park, Cathedral, old streets and the hilltop complex, verifying current opening, entry, heat exposure, slopes and accessibility. Cabo de Gata-Níjar is a separate volcanic-coast journey with coves, cliffs and protected landscapes; Tabernas, Mojácar and Granada each require their own road plan and must not be compressed into the local city day.
