Madeira's official tourism board describes Funchal in a bay shaped like a natural amphitheatre and as the archipelago's principal tourist, commercial and cultural center. Sugar and wine helped define its trading history after it became a city in 1508. A realistic first route can connect the waterfront and Avenida Arriaga with the Sé, Mercado dos Lavradores—open since 1940—and the Santa Maria old town. Monte is a separate ascent whose cable-car, road, garden and traditional sledge operations need current confirmation and a protected return. Câmara de Lobos, Cabo Girão, the UNESCO-listed Laurisilva and levadas, Pico do Areeiro, Santana, Porto Moniz and the eastern peninsula each require their own road, trail, weather, access and timing decision.
