THE SHORT ANSWER
Redwood National and State Parks announced September 25 that prescribed burns are planned in six Bald Hills areas beginning in late September 2026 as weather and burn conditions allow. Visitors may see fire crews and equipment near Bald Hills Road, smoke can reduce visibility, and temporary traffic control may be used.
This is not a park-wide closure notice and it is not a fixed burn calendar. The current NPS conditions page lists Bald Hills Road as open with hazard conditions and existing road damage. Travelers should slow down, follow crew directions, and recheck current park conditions immediately before driving the road.
WHAT NPS ANNOUNCED
The National Park Service says prescribed-fire work is planned in the DA Second Growth, Williams Ridge, Schoolhouse, Wooden Gate, Lower Dolason and South Boundary units in the Bald Hills area. Operations are expected to begin in late September when weather, fuel moisture, staffing and other required conditions allow.
Because prescribed burns depend on a suitable weather window, the September 25 announcement does not establish an exact ignition date or a guaranteed end time for each unit. Do not turn a weather-dependent burn plan into a fixed appointment on a travel itinerary.
BALD HILLS ROAD IS CURRENTLY OPEN, BUT CONDITIONS CAN CHANGE
The current Redwood National and State Parks conditions page lists Bald Hills Road as Open / Hazard Conditions and warns of road damage. That is the status to use for present planning, not a promise that the road will remain open or delay-free on a future travel date.
NPS says visitors in the Bald Hills area may encounter crews and equipment near the road while burn operations are active. Traffic control may be in place. If crews are working, slow down, follow posted directions and do not drive around a closure or traffic-control point.
SMOKE CAN CHANGE VISIBILITY AND THE PRACTICAL ITINERARY
NPS says smoke from prescribed fire may reduce visibility. Smoke can also move with wind and terrain, so an area that is clear at one point in the day may not have identical conditions later.
If a drive, hike, photography stop or scenic viewpoint depends on clear visibility, keep a backup plan and check the current park conditions before departure. The September 25 announcement concerns prescribed-fire units in and around the Bald Hills area. It does not say every road, trail, campground, visitor center, beach or redwood-grove destination in the broader park system is closed.
Plan around the exact area in the itinerary. If the trip does not use Bald Hills Road or a nearby burn unit, check the responsible current page for that destination rather than applying the Bald Hills notice to the entire park.

Before driving into Bald Hills, check the current Redwood National and State Parks conditions page. If prescribed-fire work is active, allow extra time, avoid a schedule that depends on an exact arrival minute, and be prepared for smoke or crew-directed traffic control.
For RVs, trailers or drivers uncomfortable with narrow and rough roads, review the park's Bald Hills Road guidance before committing to the route.
