THE SHORT ANSWER
Death Valley National Park has partially reopened Saline Valley Warm Springs Campground after the September 15 fire. NPS says the camping area around Palm Spring and the area between Lower Springs and Palm Spring are open, while the burned Lower Springs area remains closed to public entry.
That means neither "all of Saline Valley Warm Springs is closed" nor "the whole campground is open again" is accurate. Travelers should plan around the specific Lower Springs closure and verify current park conditions immediately before making the long remote drive.
WHAT REOPENED
NPS says a portion of Saline Valley Warm Springs Campground reopened on September 17. The camping area around Palm Spring and between Lower Springs and Palm Spring is open. The Palm Spring section was not burned in the September 15 fire.
This partial reopening is specific to the areas identified by NPS. It should not be expanded into a claim that every soaking area, campsite, access road or facility at Saline Valley Warm Springs is available.
WHAT IS STILL CLOSED
The superintendent's closure order keeps Lower Springs closed to all public entry. NPS says the closed area includes the former grass lawn, campground host site, soaking tubs including Crystal Pool, and surrounding areas.
The closure is a safety measure following the fire. NPS identifies serious post-fire site hazards in the closed area. Do not enter the closure or treat an apparently intact soaking tub as permission to use it.
WHY THE FIRE CHANGED THE LOWER SPRINGS AREA
The September 15 fire was contained within the Lower Spring area. NPS reported that infrastructure at the volunteer host site was destroyed and piping to and from the Lower Springs pools was damaged. The soaking tubs appeared undamaged in the initial assessment, but appearance is not a safety clearance.
The September 18 update said the fire had low potential for spread but still had hot spots. Conditions can change after the source-check date, so rely on the current NPS conditions and closure order rather than an older social post or saved map.
REMOTE-ACCESS PLANNING MATTERS HERE
Saline Valley Warm Springs is in a remote western part of Death Valley National Park, about 40 miles from the nearest paved road. A partial campground reopening does not guarantee that a particular access route is in good condition or appropriate for your vehicle.
Check current Death Valley road and weather information before departure, carry appropriate water and emergency supplies, and make a conservative turn-around decision if road or weather conditions exceed your vehicle, experience or preparation. This fire closure affects the Lower Springs area at Saline Valley Warm Springs. It is not evidence that Death Valley National Park as a whole is closed. Likewise, an open Palm Spring camping area does not mean every Death Valley campground, road, lodging property, fuel stop or visitor facility is open.
Build the itinerary by verifying each critical piece separately: the park alert, the Saline Valley closure, road conditions, weather, your intended camping area and any services you plan to use.
