THE SHORT ANSWER
NPS says Water Canyon Campground and designated northwest/southwest backcountry beach camping on Santa Rosa Island reopen October 14, 2026. The southeast quadrant remains closed to backcountry camping for the rest of the 2026 recreation season, and fire-recovery closures still apply.
Day use already resumed July 1. Overnight travelers should confirm both camping and transportation for the same dates; a campsite reservation does not guarantee transportation.
Water Canyon Campground is about 1.5 miles from Bechers Bay pier. NPS says campers must carry their own supplies and pack out trash. Backcountry routes can involve long distances, strong winds, tides and limited reliable water.
