THE SHORT ANSWER
Rock Creek Park is temporarily closing portions of Waterside Drive NW in Washington, D.C. for roadway rehabilitation through November 13, 2026. The first phase closes the southern portion between the northbound Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway offramp and Massachusetts Avenue NW to through motor traffic from September 21 through November 13. A second phase, October 25 through November 13, also closes the northern portion between Massachusetts Avenue NW and the northbound Parkway onramp.
This is a localized road-construction closure, not a closure of Rock Creek Park as a whole. NPS says adjacent sidewalks are not included in the southern-phase closure, embassies and other driveways retain vehicle access during the project, and nearby park roads remain available subject to their own current rules and conditions.
PHASE 1: SEPTEMBER 21–NOVEMBER 13
NPS says the southern portion of Waterside Drive NW is closed to through motor vehicle traffic between the northbound Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway offramp and Massachusetts Avenue NW. Property access for embassies and other driveways in the project area continues.
Southbound drivers who would normally enter the Parkway from Massachusetts Avenue are directed to the P Street NW onramp. Northbound Parkway traffic needs to exit at K Street NW or at Shoreham Drive NW and Beach Drive NW.
PHASE 2: OCTOBER 25–NOVEMBER 13
NPS says the northern portion of Waterside Drive NW is also closed to through motor vehicles between Massachusetts Avenue NW and the northbound Parkway onramp. Most driveways on that section retain access.
The important planning boundary is northbound access: NPS says northbound access to Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway will not be available from Massachusetts Avenue NW during this phase because no detour alternative exists at that location.
SIDEWALKS, PROPERTY ACCESS, AND PARK-WIDE STATUS
The NPS determination specifically says the southern road closure does not include adjacent sidewalks. It also preserves motor-vehicle access to embassies and other driveways in the project area.
Do not turn the Waterside Drive construction into a claim that every Rock Creek Park road, trail, picnic area, attraction, embassy, hotel, or neighborhood destination is closed. Check the exact route involved in the itinerary and current park alerts before travel.
BUILD EXTRA TIME INTO DC ITINERARIES
The official determination identifies detour routes but does not publish a guaranteed delay length. Washington traffic, commute periods, construction activity, events, weather, and unrelated incidents can all affect travel time.
If an itinerary depends on a timed museum entry, embassy appointment, restaurant reservation, airport transfer, or other fixed appointment, allow additional margin and verify a current map immediately before departure. Do not treat an old navigation route as proof that a closed turn or onramp is available.
