THE SHORT ANSWER
Pinnacles National Park's current cave-status page lists Bear Gulch Lower Cave OPEN, Bear Gulch Upper Cave CLOSED, and Balconies Cave OPEN. That is the status to use for a September 2026 visit unless the National Park Service posts a newer closure.
The more important planning point is that Bear Gulch access changes seasonally for bat protection. NPS says the Lower Cave is typically open from mid-July through September 30, while October is the period when the entire Bear Gulch Cave generally opens for at least the last week and potentially earlier depending on bat presence. Do not treat October 1 as an automatic full-cave opening date; check the live NPS status immediately before the trip.
CURRENT CAVE STATUS
The National Park Service currently lists:
• Bear Gulch Lower Cave — OPEN. • Bear Gulch Upper Cave — CLOSED. • Balconies Cave — OPEN.
Those statuses can change outside the normal seasonal pattern because of flooding, rockfall, vandalism, sensitive bat populations or other emergencies. A saved itinerary is not a substitute for the live cave-status page.
WHY BEAR GULCH ACCESS CHANGES
Bear Gulch Cave protects a colony of Townsend's big-eared bats. NPS manages the Lower and Upper sections independently so visitors can often use the Lower Cave while the Upper Cave remains closed.
NPS says the entire cave normally closes from mid-May through mid-July during the bat pupping season. The Lower Cave typically reopens in mid-July and can remain open through September 30. In October, the entire cave generally opens for the last week and may open earlier for more of the month depending on bat activity.
That schedule is biological rather than a guaranteed calendar reservation. If bat behavior or another hazard requires a change, the park can close or delay access.
OCTOBER 2026 PLANNING
If an October trip depends on walking through the full Bear Gulch Cave, build the itinerary around a same-week status check rather than assuming the Upper Cave is open because the calendar says October.
For a late-September visit, the current live status is more useful than the general October schedule: Lower Bear Gulch is open, Upper Bear Gulch is closed, and Balconies Cave is open at the latest NPS check.
If the Upper Cave remains closed, do not describe Bear Gulch as fully open. Conversely, an Upper Cave closure does not mean every Bear Gulch route or the entire national park is closed.
BALCONIES CAVE IS A SEPARATE ACCESS QUESTION
Balconies Cave is currently listed OPEN. NPS notes that cave areas can be narrow, dark, uneven and wet, and that flooding can close caves. Bring a flashlight and evaluate the route for the actual group rather than treating an open status as a promise of easy conditions.
The park brochure identifies Balconies Cave as accessible from the Old Pinnacles/Balconies trail system and Bear Gulch Cave from the Bear Gulch/Moses Spring area. Entrance, parking and trail conditions are separate from cave status and should be checked for the actual day.
WHAT AN OPEN CAVE STATUS DOES NOT GUARANTEE
OPEN does not guarantee dry footing, parking, uncrowded trails, ranger staffing, campground availability, a specific through-route, or that every member of a group can safely manage the cave terrain.
Pinnacles' talus caves can require scrambling over rocks, walking under low ceilings and moving through dark or wet sections. NPS specifically advises visitors to use a flashlight and notes that caves may close because of flooding.
HOW TO VERIFY BEFORE LEAVING
First, open the current NPS Status of the Caves page and check each cave section separately. Second, review current park conditions and weather. Third, confirm the entrance and trailhead that fit the itinerary because the east and west sides of Pinnacles are not connected by a through-road inside the park. Finally, carry a flashlight and choose a route appropriate for the group's mobility and comfort with dark, uneven terrain.
If the cave-status page changes after this guide's source-check date, use the newer NPS status.
